Engagement Metrics — What They Mean
Opens
Any pixel load or engagement signal (click, forward, reply). Includes "implicit opens" from downstream actions. Note: some clients block pixel tracking, so real opens are usually higher.
Clicks
Every tracked link click. Look at the Top Links breakdown to see which content is pulling weight.
Replies
The only metric that pays your rent. Track this weekly and correlate against subject lines and segments.
Bounces + Unable to Deliver
Hard bounces = bad address. Soft bounces = temporary (full inbox, server issue). Both count against sender reputation.
Benchmarks for Cold B2B Outreach
Opens: 25–45% is healthy. Under 20% suggests either subject-line issues or deliverability problems.
Clicks: 2–5% is normal. Above 8% usually means either strong CTA copy or a highly warm audience.
Replies: 2–5% is the industry norm for cold. 8–12% is exceptional; 15%+ means you're likely emailing warm or referred contacts.
Bounces: keep under 3%. At 5%+, your list has decay problems and needs cleanup — see the Cleaning Your Contact List guide.
Unsubscribes: 0.1–0.5% is normal. Above 2% signals either poor targeting or fatigued list.
The Overview Extras — Where the Real Signal Lives
Time-To-First-Open
How long after sending do people open? Peaks in the first 2 hours are ideal; a long tail suggests inbox neglect or wrong time zone.
Top Clicked Links
Shows which links (pretty URLs, not tracked variants) drove engagement. Double down on what works.
Week Snapshot
7-day rolling volume + opens + replies. Look for consistent trends, not day-over-day noise.
Contact Health
Which segments are hottest and which are decaying. Refresh cold segments quarterly.
Engagement Funnel
Sent → Opened → Clicked → Replied. Look for the biggest drop-off — that's your next optimization target.
Do
- Check the dashboard weekly — not hourly. Trends matter more than moments.
- Compare like-for-like segments, not the whole book.
- Drill into cards to see the underlying campaigns and contacts.
- Correlate reply rate with subject-line variants and personalization depth.
- Watch bounce and unsubscribe rates as leading indicators of deliverability trouble.
Don't
- Don't optimize opens in a vacuum — high opens with zero replies means clickbait subject lines.
- Skip vanity comparisons between wildly different campaigns.
- Don't panic on a single-day dip. Look at 7-day averages.
- Never chase a click-rate spike caused by scanners — filter out bot activity.
- Don't ignore the funnel drop-offs; they show exactly where to iterate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my open rate suddenly higher?
Usually one of three things: better subject line, tighter segment, or scanner/security-bot activity. Cross-check against clicks and replies to distinguish real lift from bot noise.
Are pixel-tracked opens accurate?
Directionally, yes; absolutely, no. Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates opens, and some corporate filters block them. Use opens as a relative signal, not a source of truth.
How often should I archive campaigns?
Archive when a campaign is fully processed and its data is no longer relevant to ongoing decisions. Keep the last 3 months live for trend analysis.
What's the single most important metric?
Reply rate. Everything else is a proxy — opens, clicks, forwards. Replies are the outcome that actually correlates with pipeline.
